The financing of defence technology development in India has transformed dramatically over the past five years, moving from an almost exclusively government-funded model to a vibrant ecosystem that combines public grants, defence-specific venture capital, corporate investment, and international co-investment frameworks. The Bharat Defence Tech Show has been instrumental in educating defence technology companies about this evolving funding landscape and connecting them with the right capital sources for their specific development stage and technology domain.

Government funding mechanisms for defence technology development have multiplied and strengthened. The iDEX programme provides grants of up to INR 100 million to startups and MSMEs addressing specific defence challenges. The Technology Development Fund (TDF) offers larger grants for more mature technology development projects. The Defence Investor Cell, established by the Ministry of Defence, provides single-window facilitation for defence-sector investment proposals. BDTS has hosted senior officials from each of these organisations, enabling companies to ask detailed questions about eligibility, application processes, and evaluation criteria.

Venture capital investment in Indian defence technology has grown substantially, driven by the success of early defence tech investments and the structural changes in FDI and procurement policy that have made defence a more commercially viable sector. Funds including Kalaari Capital, Ideaspring Capital, and international funds with dual-use technology mandates have participated in BDTS to identify pipeline investments. BDTS has facilitated a particularly valuable "warm introduction" service, providing fund managers with curated access to the most promising companies in the BDTS showcase community.

Corporate venture arms of India's major defence companies โ€” Tata Sons, Mahindra Group, L&T, and others โ€” have also been active at BDTS, seeking acquisition targets and strategic investment opportunities in startups developing technologies complementary to their existing defence business lines.
