India's Air Force Modernisation: Rafale, TEJAS, and the Quest for Air Superiority at BDTS

The Indian Air Force faces one of the most daunting modernisation challenges in its history: maintaining air superiority across multiple operational theatres while simultaneously inducting new platforms, managing an ageing fleet, and developing fifth-generation indigenous fighter capability. The Bharat Defence Tech Show has provided an invaluable forum for candid discussions about this challenge, bringing together IAF officers, HAL engineers, DRDO scientists, and private sector aviation companies to examine solutions across the procurement and development spectrum.

The Rafale induction has been a transformative event for the IAF. With its omnirole capability, METEOR beyond-visual-range missiles, and RBE2 AESA radar, the Rafale has significantly enhanced India's combat power at the high end of the air warfare spectrum. BDTS discussions have addressed the industrial offset implementation under the Rafale deal and the technology transfers to Indian companies that are creating a foundation for more sophisticated future programmes.

The TEJAS Light Combat Aircraft programme represents India's most successful indigenous aircraft development effort. The transition from the TEJAS Mk1A to the TEJAS Mk2 variant, with its more powerful GE-414 engine and advanced avionics, is a critical step in building HAL's capability to handle the even more ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). At BDTS, HAL officials and private sector participants in the TEJAS supply chain have discussed the production ramp-up challenges and the industrial capacity investments required to meet the IAF's ambitious induction schedule.

Private sector participation in India's aerospace industry has been a recurring BDTS theme, with a particular focus on how companies like Tata Advanced Systems, Mahindra Defence, and a new generation of aerospace startups are becoming credible partners for HAL in producing complex aircraft subsystems.
