India's Satellite Navigation System NavIC: Military Applications and Strategic Value

India's Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC), formerly known as the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), represents a strategic achievement that few have fully appreciated: India is now among a handful of nations โ€” alongside the US (GPS), Russia (GLONASS), EU (Galileo), and China (BeiDou) โ€” operating an independent, sovereign satellite navigation system. The military implications of this capability are profound, and the Bharat Defence Tech Show has been instrumental in educating India's defence establishment about NavIC's strategic value and commercial opportunities.

In military operations, GPS dependence represents a significant vulnerability. An adversary with the capability to jam or spoof GPS signals can effectively blind precision-guided munitions, navigating drones, and location-dependent command systems. NavIC's dual-frequency L5 and S-band signals, combined with a military-specific restricted service (RS) that provides encrypted, anti-jamming navigation, offer India's armed forces a GPS-independent navigation layer that is entirely controlled by India.

BDTS has facilitated discussions on integrating NavIC receivers into India's defence systems โ€” from precision-guided munitions and artillery shells to military vehicles, aircraft, and soldier-worn navigation devices. The challenge of NavIC-GPS hybridisation, which provides both systems' coverage advantages while ensuring that NavIC remains available even when GPS is denied, has been a technical focus of BDTS innovation sessions.

The commercial ecosystem around NavIC โ€” including receiver chip manufacturers, systems integrators, and application developers โ€” has been catalysed through BDTS connections with defence procurement agencies. NavIC's global coverage aspirations, including planned expansion of the constellation to provide global coverage, were also examined at BDTS in the context of India's defence export opportunities.
