Space and Defence Convergence: How BDTS is Shaping India's Military Space Strategy

The militarisation of space is one of the defining strategic challenges of our era. With adversaries developing anti-satellite weapons, jamming capabilities, and cyber tools targeting space-based assets, India's ability to operate effectively in the space domain has become a core component of its national security calculus. The Bharat Defence Tech Show has positioned itself at the forefront of India's defence-space convergence dialogue, bringing together ISRO scientists, Defence Space Agency officials, private space startups, and military planners in unprecedented strategic conversations.

India's Defence Space Agency, established in 2019 under the Integrated Defence Staff, has been building capabilities for space-based ISR, satellite communications, and space domain awareness. BDTS discussions have explored how the agency can leverage the commercial space boom โ€” with Indian startups like Pixxel, Skyroot, and Dhruva Space rapidly maturing โ€” to access cutting-edge Earth observation, communication, and navigation capabilities at a fraction of traditional government programme costs.

The dual-use nature of space technology is a recurring BDTS theme. Commercial high-resolution satellite imagery, initially developed for agriculture monitoring and urban planning, is increasingly being applied to military target acquisition and battle damage assessment. BDTS has facilitated discussions on the governance frameworks and data sovereignty protections needed to allow commercial satellite operators to serve defence customers without compromising national security.

India's anti-satellite test in 2019 demonstrated a kinetic counterspace capability, but BDTS discussions have highlighted the growing importance of non-kinetic space warfare โ€” including electronic warfare against satellite signals, cyber attacks on ground stations, and directed energy weapons. These emerging domains represent significant market opportunities for Indian defence startups with expertise in electronic warfare and advanced communications.
