The Role of Academia in Defence Research: IITs, NITs, and BDTS Partnerships

India's academic institutions โ€” particularly the Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, and central universities with strong science and engineering programmes โ€” represent an underutilised resource in the national defence innovation ecosystem. The Bharat Defence Tech Show has actively worked to change this, creating structured dialogue between academia, DRDO, and the defence industry that is beginning to produce tangible technology development outcomes.

The IITs have demonstrated remarkable capacity for defence-relevant fundamental research across domains including advanced materials, quantum sensing, AI and machine learning, robotics, and complex systems engineering. However, the translation of this research into defence applications has historically been hampered by a lack of familiarity with defence requirements, security clearance processes, and the patience required to navigate multi-year technology development cycles. BDTS has addressed this gap by bringing academic researchers into direct contact with DRDO scientists and armed forces operators who can articulate requirements and guide research prioritisation.

Several BDTS sessions have focused on the creation of University Centres of Excellence for Defence Research โ€” dedicated facilities within leading academic institutions that can maintain the security standards, DRDO oversight, and defence focus needed to undertake classified and sensitive research programmes. The model, which has been highly successful in the United States, Israel, and South Korea, is increasingly attractive to Indian universities as they seek to expand their research funding base and industry engagement.

The development of defence-specific academic curricula โ€” covering defence systems engineering, military operations research, defence economics, and national security studies โ€” has been advocated strongly through BDTS policy dialogues, with the aim of creating a pipeline of graduates who can immediately contribute to India's defence industrial workforce.
